Background

As part of a larger project created in partnership with Qatar Airways and Priestman Goode, I was responsible for the Engineering Package delivery for the 3m x 2m Light Feature.

Designing for Compliance

As this was a unique part in size and form for this industry, I collaborated with the Certification and Stress teams to define our means of compliance including, structural load analysis, safety features and system integration.

Design & Development

Using hand sketches and Catia, a modular design was defined around ease of installation (tie-rods and pins), maintenance (LRU access) and means of compliance.

The light shade itself was one or the more complex parts, required to be made from 2-part spun aluminium sheet into a venturi shape, laser cut pattern and finishing in Rose Gold.

Test Installation & Feedback

We created a complete A380 lounge mock-up where we could test install the light feature in context with the rest of the lounge furniture. Overall the feedback was positive, however we were required to add an additional Oxygen Mask box for passengers in that area, resulting in a small rework.

Final Thoughts

One of the more beautiful projects I have been able to work on, where I was able to encounter 'metal spinning' DFM and designing for 'no-visible screw heads' to create a truly special, certifiable, unique piece of aircraft interiors history.
