Product Design Concepts

Offering ideation and visionary Product Design concepts for an ETH Indoor Farming Startup

Date

February 5, 2025

Background & Problem Statement

I was approached by an ETH-based start-up, that had been busy focusing on the potential for Indoor Farming. They had a solid technical concept, but wanted to explore some product design concepts to help them gain traction in the market and win further funding.

Research & Strategy

Through interviews, research and analysis, we created a strategy based upon creating a modular solution, where the customer could customise the size and type of the Indoor Farming unit, whilst placing a heavy focus on creating a look that is not out of place in a living room or kitchen space.

We wanted to change the perception of Indoor Farming, lower the barriers to entry and create a product where design, lifestyle and indoor farming come together.

Product Design

The design of the system draws on a constant form, but with different functions, allowing for a fully customisable set-up. Clean, minimal shapes with ease-of-access for maintenance and feature accessibility were highlighted with flashes of colour and lighting, giving the TERA unit a visually striking appearance, bridging the gap between functional unit and furniture item.

The product design also encompassed the following features:

  • Base, Large Module and Small Module

  • A safe and secure stacking mechanism, ensuring safety of use

  • Electrical and Water system connection between modules

  • Electrical and Plumbing System Integration

  • Ventilation

Results & Response

We showcased the Product and Design to the Sanitas Troesch new business team who were really impressed at the innovation in Indoor Farming, and the design elements which allowed them to visualise the TERA unit in many of their kitchen environments.

Learnings

Whilst the product was well received, Sanitas Troesch were interested in combining the technology with their standard equipment to offer TERA as an integrated system.

Conclusion

A great collaboration, harnessing the power of innovation and great product design. Both parties were happy with the outcomes, however, it was decided that production was postponed, with the focus on proving the MVP product traction in a more simplified, low-cost direction.
